Premium or budget tires: what you get for the money

A set of tires can cost very different amounts for the same size. Here is what the extra money usually buys, and when you can do without it.

What premium tires do better

• Grip and braking. Better rubber compounds and tread design, most noticeable in the wet and the cold.
• Tread life. They generally last longer and often come with a longer mileage warranty.
• Comfort. Less road noise and a smoother ride.
• Fuel. Lower rolling resistance can save a little at the pump.

What budget tires do well

• Price. A much lower cost up front.
• Everyday driving. Enough grip and handling for around-town use in normal conditions.

The trade-offs are faster wear under hard use and less performance in wet or icy conditions and at highway speed.

How to choose

Think about your worst driving day, not your average one. If that day is a highway run to Vanderhoof in January, or towing in the rain, spend more on the tire. If the vehicle mostly does short trips in town, a good budget tire can be the sensible choice.

Tire Capital carries top brands and quality budget lines, and most of the budget lines are backed with a Road Hazard Warranty. Ask for the details, tell the team what you want to spend, and they will show you what fits.
